A two-day tour taking in the world heritage site of Wat Phou, the Xe Pian Protected area, and the natural wetlands of Si Pan Don

Day 1: Pakse – Champasak – Xe Pian – Don Khone

After your breakfast, we drive to Champasak and the UNESCO world heritage site of Wat Phou. Wat Phou dates back to the 6th Century and was the first temple to be built by the Khmer Empire. Wat Phou was the center of the Khmer Kingdom before their capital was moved to Angkor. It was originally built as a Hindu temple before being converted into a Buddhist temple in later centuries.

After exploring Wat Phou return to the town of Champasak where you can have lunch overlooking the Mekong River. Travel to the town of Ban Kiat Ngong in the Xe Pian NBCA, from here you can either take the option of walking to the temple mount of Phu Asa or traveling by elephant. From the top of Phu Asa, there are amazing views of the Xe Pian Wetlands. The elephant trek or walk takes about 45 minutes and is about 3 Km one way. Continue onto the ferry port of Nakasang where you will take a small longtail boat to the Island of Don Khone spending the night in bungalows overlooking the railway bridge and the Mekong River.

Accommodation: Seng Ahloune Resort

Day 2: Don Khone – Pakse

Leaving from Don Khone after breakfast by bicycle to visit Liphi waterfall before heading to the southern tip of Don Khone known as Han Khone where you will see the other side of the old French Ferry Terminal. Take a boat ride to see the Irrawaddy dolphins before returning back to Han Khone and by bicycle back to the old railway bridge. Check out of your bungalow and cross back over the river to Nakasang where you can travel the short distance to Khon Phapheng waterfall.

Returning to Don Khone cross to the mainland at Ban Nakasang, and continue south to Mekong's largest waterfall, Khon Phapheng. This is part of the Mekong fault line. The fault line stretches across the entire Mekong River and has been formed by the river eroding the softer rock downstream. Return to Pakse arriving at around 18:00
