Day 1: Arrive in Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang is perhaps the best-preserved traditional city in Southeast Asia. The tranquillity and charm of this UNESCO World Heritage town, combined with its splendid natural scenery and cultural sights, make it one of the most delightful places to visit in Laos.

Upon arrival at the airport, you will be welcomed and transferred to your hotel, where you can enjoy free time at your leisure to stroll around. Time permitting, our guide can take you on a short walking tour of the town, including a visit to the night market. Here, you can browse a lovely collection of handmade textiles from local and hill tribe communities in the surrounding areas. If you prefer or are arriving late, this can be arranged for the following day.

Day 2: Full-Day City Tour

Explore the historic UNESCO World Heritage city of Luang Prabang and gain insight into its rich culture and history. The city offers a fascinating blend of Buddhist temples and French colonial architecture.

Your first stop is Wat Visoun, a replica of an older temple that was originally erected on the same site in 1513. It houses numerous religious art treasures. Next, visit Wat Xieng Thong, a royal temple built on the banks of the Mekong River in 1559. It has remained relatively undamaged by various invasions over the centuries.

The temple is richly decorated with impressive carvings, murals, and mosaics. Continue to the Laotian Royal Palace, officially known as Haw Kham, built during the French colonial era for the King and his family. In 1975, the monarchy was overthrown, and the palace was converted into a National Museum, now home to many artifacts showcasing Laotian culture.

Then visit Wat Mai, built in 1796, located at the foot of Mount Phousi.

In the late afternoon, climb Phousi Hill. With its 328 steps, it is a rewarding ascent, offering panoramic views over the town center and the Mekong River.

Return to your hotel, and enjoy the evening at your leisure.

Day 3: Ban Chan & Pak Ou Caves

This morning, you may wish to wake up early to participate in the daily alms-giving ritual, where saffron-robed monks receive offerings, including Laos’s famous sticky rice, from residents.

After breakfast, board a traditional long-tail boat for a scenic journey along the Mekong River to its confluence with the Nam Ou River. Stop at Ban Chan village, known for its traditional pottery-making, where you can observe the production process.

Continue to visit Wat Xiengman and Wat Longkhoun, then cruise through the beautiful Laotian countryside, passing local villages before arriving at the famous Pak Ou Caves. These caves consist of two interconnected chambers filled with thousands of Buddha statues left by pilgrims over generations.

On the return journey to Luang Prabang, stop at Ban Sanghai to observe the traditional process of rice wine distillation. Arrive back in Luang Prabang at around 5:00 PM.
