A day tour to the World Heritage site of Wat Phu and the ancient ruins of Phu Asa temple offering great views of the Xe-Pian Wetlands.
Departing Pakse at 08:00 head south by road to the charming colonial town of Champasak and continue another 11km to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Wat Phou. Wat Phou dates back to the 6th Century and was the first temple to be built by the Khmer Empire. Wat Phu was the center of the Khmer Kingdom before their capital was moved to Angkor. It was originally built as a Hindu temple before being converted into a Buddhist temple in later centuries.
After exploring Wat Phou return to the town of Champasak where you will have lunch overlooking the Mekong River. Cross over the Mekong and drive to the town of Ban Kiat Ngong, located in the Xe Pian National Protected Area. Take a 1-hour walk (~3 km) to the top of the Phu Asa to see the temple mount. From the top of Phu Asa, you will see the ancient temple ruins and the amazing views of the Xe-Pian Wetlands below. The walk down takes about 45 minutes. After the trek, it is another 1-hour drive back to Pakse arriving around 17:00.
